Voting

Mail-in Ballots

If you are registered to vote in the state of PA you can request a mail-in ballot without providing a reason (unlike absentee ballots).  You can request your ballot online if you have a PA photo ID (a PA driver’s license or a PA photo ID issued by the PA Dept of Transportation).

At this time, we are recommending that voters strongly consider requesting a mail-in ballot to avoid long lines as well as potential transmission of the COVID-19 flu.

To request a mail-in ballot, please visit the PA Voter Services website.  Make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to receive your ballot AND to get it back to the MontCo election office by the date of the election (postmarks do NOT count; your ballot must be at the county election office by 8pm of primary or election day.

New Voting System

Montgomery County has a new voter-marked paper ballot system with a verifiable paper trail.

The new system replaced the electronic push-button voting machines the County purchased in 1996 which were nearing the end of their useful life. The old machines also did not meet the state mandate for counties to have a voting system with a verifiable paper trail in place for the 2020 Presidential election.

With the new system, voters use a pen to fill out a ballot and have an opportunity to check it for accuracy before submitting it to a scanner that tabulates the votes and keeps the ballot in a secure container for audits or recounts.

Each polling place will also have a fully ADA compliant touchscreen ballot marking device that can be used to select candidates. Any voter can use this device. When the voter is done filling out the ballot, they can review their selections and print out their completed paper ballot. The voter will then submit their ballot into the scanner for tabulation the same as the ballots filled out by hand.

To learn more about this, check out the New Voting System website, including videos of how to use the new machines, click here.
