Perkiomen Trail

Autumn scene along the Perkiomen Trail
in the Borough. Shown here is the view between Main Street and
Ninth Avenue. |
The Perkiomen Trail is a 19-mile
multi-use public trail for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, cross-country
skiers, and equestrians. The Trail was developed and is maintained
by the Montgomery County Department of Parks and will link the county's
parks strung along the Perkiomen Creek.
The Trail passes through the Borough from the south
side near Rt. 29 and Park Avenue to the north side near Rt. 29 and
Ninth Avenue. In between it passes behind the Shopping Centers of
the Borough's merchant district; crosses Main Street at Third Avenue;
and straddles the wooded ridge behind the Ursinus College campus.
As it passes through the Borough the Trail becomes another link
in the Borough's network of sidewalks. The 10-foot wide Trail is
mostly paved but some portions are cinder-covered. Still the surface
is hard and appropriate for strollers and wagons as well as joggers
and walkers. According to John Woods, chief of the county's open
space planning, in the future the trail's entire length may be paved.
"We want it to be available to people with special needs,"
he said.
