Mail Stolen From the Blue Collection Boxes Outside the Collegeville Post Office
Sometime between Saturday, April 27 at 3 pm and 8 a.m. Monday, April 29, mail was stolen from the drive-up blue boxes outside the Collegeville Post Office on West Third Ave.
If you dropped off any checks in the blue collection boxes the weekend of April 27, the Collegeville Police strongly encourage you to cancel the checks and issue new checks to prevent fraud to your account. The police ask that you monitor your checking accounts. If you suspect any fraud to your accounts, please contact your local police department to file an incident report. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has been notified of the incident and will be investigating the theft.
Unfortunately, theft from the postal service’s mailboxes has skyrocketed across the country in recent years. It is thought to be due to the proliferation of universal postal service keys. Although there were fewer than 60,000 complaints in 2018, last year there were more than 250,000.
