Ambulance
Primary EMS Coverage
In the fall of 2023, Collegeville Borough was made aware that our current EMS provider, Freedom Valley Medical Rescue, would likely need to close their Collegeville Station in 2024. Immediately the Borough began looking into other coverage options for our residents. We met with multiple EMS providers within the region and worked out a plan to provide what we feel is the most reliable and beneficial EMS coverage for our residents. In the event of certain emergencies, the 911 dispatch system will dispatch the closest ambulance as our primary ambulance(s) may be on other calls.
At the Council meeting in February, Council passed a resolution establishing primary EMS coverage to be provided by Friendship Ambulance and Lower Providence EMS. The Borough will be split into coverage areas, with properties on the East side of Main Street being covered by Lower Providence EMS, and West Side of Main Street being served by Friendship Ambulance. Friendship Ambulance has a station in Upper Providence Township. The Borough will provide financial support to both ambulance companies, and that direct financial support will provide homeowners and tenants of single-family homes a membership to their local ambulance provider. Both companies serving the Borough will recognize and honor the other’s membership, as they will be backing each other up on calls. It was important to Borough Council to work with a provider(s) that would allow us to continue to provide this membership benefit to its residents. Commercial properties and apartment complexes would not be automatically covered with a membership, but would be able to purchase a membership directly through their service provider.
EMS membership is somewhat like a secondary insurance. Many insurance plans do not completely cover the cost of an ambulance trip, leaving you with the bill. Your ambulance membership will automatically cover the balance of any medically necessary transportation to the hospital, as well as advanced life support or ALS unit, and any paramedic services provided at the time of your emergency that is not covered by insurance. FVMR will accept the insurance company’s payment as paid in full. If you do not have ambulance coverage through your insurance, this membership gives you an extremely discounted rate. If you have a deductible plan, you would be responsible for the deductible at the rate which the insurance company would pay.
Both of these EMS providers have provided service within the Borough in the past as there are times when our previous primary responder was not available due to being on another call or unavailable to respond. In the event of certain emergencies, the 911 dispatch system will dispatch the closest ambulance as our primary ambulance(s) may be on other calls, so you may still continue to see other EMS providers in the Borough.
